Tacoma Basketball Academy
- TBA Information
The Tacoma Basketball Academy's (TBA or Academy) mission is to focus on the education and attitudes of the youth of Tacoma, Washington and surrounding areas. The TBA will not discriminate based upon race, gender, creed, or religious preference. The Academy will provide all the necessary resources to assist the young people of this city become responsible and productive members of society while using athletics as an encouraging bridge to academics.
Impact and Need
- Year round programs essential to ensure academic and athletic success
- Roughly 60,000 students between the ages of 5-18 in the city of Tacoma
- Alarming number of single parent households requires greater community assistance
- Environment affects success or downfall of each student-TBA equals positive environment for academic and athletic growth
- Focus on academic and basketball fundamentals will increase likelihood of student athletes ability to attend a college or university on scholarship
- Centrally located facility for easy access for all Tacoma area students
Community Involvement
- Members of the TBA WILL be actively involved in the Tacoma community
- Ownership of the TBA will create a greater importance for each member
- Teach the value of volunteerism-Community service will be mandatory
- Job shadowing, mentoring, and partnering with community leaders will help broaden the students vision of their future
Basketball Skill Development
- Heavy emphasis on fundamentals and respect for the game, teammates, coaches, and officials
- Individual workout sessions focusing on footwork, strength training, and necessary basketball drill work (shooting, passing, ball-handling, defense)
- Focus on the mental aspect of the game through film study and classroom work to help create a cerebral approach to the game
Academic Success
- Individual evaluation sessions to gauge students aptitude, strengths, and weaknesses
- Tutoring, mandatory study table sessions, and constant monitoring of progress or decline
- Partnering with School District(s) to help track academic success and create an open line of communication with teachers, administrators, and counselors to create an umbrella of support
- Strict standards of performance i.e. raise the bar on what our students can achieve. Also if not eligible to play for their school, students will not be able to participate in any basketball related activities until grades are up to standard.
